The mission of the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center is to collect blood and tissue from volunteer donors and to provide the community with the highest quality health care at the lowest possible cost.

History

In its 27 years of service, the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center has been a leading partner in the growth of a vigorous health care industry. The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center, formerly the South Texas Regional Blood Bank, was incorporated as a non-for-profit community blood bank which opened its doors in January, 1974. Housed in a small building near downtown San Antonio, it outgrew this facility within two years. Moving to a new location on San Pedro Avenue in August 1976, the blood bank increased its service area to 27 counties.

In 1976, a satellite was established in Victoria, Texas to assist in managing the blood needs for that area. By 1980, the branch relocated to larger facilities on Sam Houston Drive. The San Antonio headquarters remained at the San Pedro site until 1984 when the blood bank moved into the renovated YWCA building at McCullough and Broadway. Due to expansion of services to include tissue banking, the organization changed its name to the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center in September 1994.

Construction was complete and operations were moved in December, 1994, to a new headquarters located at 6211 IH-10 West at First Park Ten Blvd. Today, the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center serves 100 hospitals and clinics in 43 South Texas counties. In addition to recruiting, collecting, processing, testing and distributing blood components, STBTC operates a certified tissue bank, maintains an autologous cord blood bank and also serves as a National Marrow Donor Program registration site.
